Newcastle United's U23 side were thrashed 5-1 by their Southampton counterparts on Monday night, and Magpies fans were quick to have their say on that result and the overall state of their youth system following the final whistle.

The young Toon side found themselves 4-0 behind before Josef Yarney forced the ball home in the 70th minute, but the goal failed to ignite any sort of comeback as Siph Mdlalose scored for Saints to in the 87th minute to wrap up a comfortable win.

The Tyneside outfit's youth system hasn't exactly been successful in producing players for the first team in recent years, with only Paul Dummett becoming a regular having come through the club's academy.

Newcastle supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the latest defeat, and while one said "no wonder only Dummett made it out", another said "should follow Huddersfield and scrap the youth academy".

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
