Loads of Newcastle fans were left emotional on Monday morning, as Rafael Benitez said goodbye to the Toon Army in a message on his official Twitter account.

It is now July and that means it’s officially the 2019-20 season. Unfortunately, that also means Benitez is officially no longer the manager of Newcastle United.

The club confirmed last week that the Spaniard will not extend his stay at St. James’ Park, leaving after the expiry of his contract.

Benitez joined in 2016 with the Magpies on the brink of relegation, and while he couldn’t stave off that threat, they did achieve promotion as champions at the first time of asking.

And while Sunderland fans will tell you that is an accomplishment in itself, Benitez went one better the following year, finishing tenth in the Premier League with a really sub-standard squad.

He shared a goodbye message to fans on Twitter on Monday, thanking the Toon Army and saying he does not regret his decision to join the club.
