According to The Northern Echo, Jonjo Shelvey is on the verge of signing a new contract with Newcastle United.
The 27-year-old will see his existing deal with the Magpies expire in the summer of 2021.
However, according to The Northern Echo, the midfielder is set to pen a fresh deal with Steve Bruce’s side.
Shelvey has struggled to earn a regular spot this season, but the Englishman was on the scoresheet in Saturday’s 3-2 win at West Ham United in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool midfielder has now managed two goals in just six league outings this season and will be hoping to build on his strike against the Hammers.
The Northern Echo claims that West Ham United and Crystal Palace have previously been interested in Shelvey, but the 2016 arrival from Swansea City is settled in the North-East.
As expected, a number of Newcastle fans have been on social media reacting to the contract report, a selection of which can be seen below:
What’s Jonjo done to earn the new deal?

Steve Bruce still thinks it’s 2010 and probably thinks he trains really well.

I’m surprised Jonjo is getting a new deal, he’s great when he shows up but you don’t always see the best of him.

We can only hope that, in the worst case, we can squeeze a bit of cash out of him while he’s still at a good age.
