It was a bittersweet Monday night for Newcastle fans as Crystal Palace capitulated at home to Manchester United, and needless to say fans found it a bit weird trying to support Manchester United.
Palace welcomed United to Selhurst Park last night knowing a win would lift them out of the relegation places and even as high as 13th if they won with a few goals to spare.
Roy Hodgson’s Eagles were flying after 50 minutes when Patrick Van Aanholt added to Andros Townsend’s opener, a result which would of moved Southampton into the bottom three and left Newcastle dangling just one point above the drop zone.
The home side crumbled emphatically in the second half though, letting United back into the match with goals from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku. Nemanja Matic compiled the Londoners’ misery, volleying in a superb winner in stoppage time to keep United in second place.
Newcastle fans will feel relieved that Palace dropped yet more points, especially considering the manner in which it happened. Still, many are not best pleased with owner Mike Ashley yet again. This time, they’re angry that they found themselves cheering for Manchester United. Some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

Of all the things that Ashley has done making me (nearly) celebrate a Man U winner is up there with the worst.
