Newcastle United have taken the Championship by storm this season, winning six consecutive matches to put themselves as the bookies favourites to win the title and seal an immediate return to the Premier League.
Not everyone has been impressed with Rafael Benitez’ side though, as Lancashire Evening Post reporter Brian Ellis pointed out the cost of the Magpies’ team at the weekend- before stating they didn’t deserve to win.
Do you know Newcastle paid £63m for their starting 11 at Preston. Bench came to £22m, making grand total of £85m. Still didn't deserve a win

After hitting Preston for six in a League Cup tie last week, Newcastle had a much tougher test in the Championship tie at the weekend as they battled to a 2-1 victory.
However, with their squad for the match costing a combined total of £85m, many expected more from the Magpies- especially considering Preston’s squad for the defeat cost a measly £850k.
The financial differences in football are becoming wider and wider with the parachute payments in the Premier League, along with the revenue differences between the top-flight and the second-tier, and this is likely to become a more familiar story in the coming seasons.
Still, it’s not exactly Newcastle’s fault though and £85m for an entire squad doesn’t really go far in modern football.
