Newcastle holding off on bid for QPR ace

The Mail on Sunday are reporting that Newcastle United are set to stall on a £15 million bid for QPR star striker Charlie Austin while they try to find out if the player would prefer to stay put in London.

New Magpies boss Steve McClaren is believed to highly rate Austin, who managed to find the net 18 times in the Premier League last season – bettered only by Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Diego Costa.

However, the St James’s Park outfit also face reported competition from London sides West Ham United and Chelsea, who are also closely monitoring Austin’s situation.

The 25-year-old was called up to the England squad for the first time in his career recently, but did not feature against either Ireland or Slovenia. who was named in Roy Hodgson’s last England squad.

Speculation mounted that the striker was interested only in staying in the capital when he tweeted earlier this month in response to transfer rumours linking him with a move away from Loftus Road: ‘Honestly where do people get this stuff from’.
