Newcastle are four points and five places clear of the Premier League relegation zone so should just able be safe in the top flight next season.

Rafa Benitez has overcome a lack of investment in the squad that got the club out of the Championship to mould an organised, counter-attacking side that should finish outside the bottom three.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard still can't afford to let his players slacken off with the survival fight so tightly contested right now.

Ideally, Benitez would have a full compliment of players available between now and the end of the season but he is not currently being afforded that luxury.

January signing Islam Slimani is the biggest name currently on the sidelines and he is yet to feature since coming to the club from Leicester on deadline day to boost the Magpies' firepower.

With help from Premier Injuries, we've looked at the latest injury news at St James' Park...

When was Elliot injured?: He picked up a thigh injury over the festive period.

Has he been missed?: Benitez had installed Elliot largely as his number one until late December but the injury has seen him fall out of contention. Martin Dubravka came in late on in the January window and an early impressive performance against Manchester United made him an instant hero. Dubravka will be looking at making his loan deal permanent and that could be bad news for Elliot and it is only going to get worse the longer he is out injured.

When was Darlow injured?: He has been sidelined with a shoulder injury which is currently being assessed.

Has he been missed?: If the arrival of Dubravka came as bad news for Elliot, then it is even worse for Darlow. He is now even further down the pecking order and his injury is preventing him from doing anything about it. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to the Championship next season but I would be surprised to see him feature again this season.

When was Slimani injured?: He arrived on loan with a thigh injury on deadline day and hasn't yet made his debut for the Magpies.

What the manager said: On February 23, Benitez said: "[He] had a setback the other day, so he won't be available and it'll be at least a couple of weeks."

Expected return date: 31/03/18

Has he been missed?: Newcastle have actually managed to fashion themselves into an attacking force just about capable of bringing about safety without Slimani. Nevertheless, he was meant to add another dimension to their frontline; that's why Benitez took the risk and signed him even when he knew he was already injured. It has been a largely pointless loan move.
