Newcastle keeping tabs on Frenchmen

Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis

Newcastle look set to add yet more French players to their squad in the current transfer window, if accounts by the Metro are true.

The Tyneside club have been strongly linked with Olympique Lyonnais striker Bafetimbi Gomis, and Alan Pardew has said ‘The Lyon president has come out and said we are involved with Gomis – and I can confirm we are. Bafetimbi is a player we think could do very well for us. He is on our sights.’

With solely a year left on Gomis’ contract, a move from Newcastle is likely to cause some consideration from their counterparts in Lyon.

Gomis is one of two French strikers that Newcastle appear to be interested in signing, with QPR’s Loic Remy heavily linked to the Magpies. With the Hoops having been relegated down to the Championship, it is likely Remy will want to leave to play in a more competitive league, and this serves as a perfect opportunity for Newcastle to bolster their attack.

This is probably a move being made with the prospect of Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse leaving the club. The forward is refusing to don the Newcastle shirt due to the connotations surrounding the sponsor, and this could well mean he is on his way to a different club.
