Newcastle United managed to keep hold of Jamaal Lascelles ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, but might be forced to sell the central defender in next summer’s transfer window.
Lascelles was strongly linked with a move away from Newcastle during the recent summer transfer window.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were both said to be interested in the central defender, while Chelsea are said to be long-term admirers of the 24-year-old.
In fairness to Lascelles, he did not press for a move away from the Magpies during the summer, but the situation could change at the end of this season.
Indeed, Newcastle look to be in for another difficult campaign, and currently sit in the Premier League relegation zone having collected just two points from their first six matches of this season.
Even if Rafael Benitez’s side manage to secure another season of Premier League football, they will find it very tough to keep hold of a player who certainly has ambitions of breaking into the senior England squad.
Newcastle have been extremely good to Lascelles. The Magpies signed him from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014, but he stayed on loan at the City Ground for the 2014-15 season.
Lascelles made 21 appearances for Newcastle during the 2015-16 campaign, and has since made over 100 appearances for his current club in all competitions.
Newcastle have helped the defender establish himself as a Premier League footballer, and Lascelles has the huge honour of being the club’s captain.
There will become a time where Lascelles wants to test himself at the next level, however, and it is difficult to imagine that he will still be with the Magpies next term.
In order to break into the England squad, the 6ft 2in ace really needs to move on, and there will not be a shortage of takers if he becomes available at the end of this season.
