Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will already be identifying summer transfer targets to strengthen his squad after they preserved their Premier League status for at least another 12 months by beating Arsenal last month.

One area he may be prioritising is at left-back, where Paul Dummett has been a regular in the starting XI with Massadio Haidara, Chancel Mbemba and Javier Manquillo all able to fill in there when required.

The Spanish manager will want more quality and strength in depth going forward next season however if the Tyneside outfit are to progress and push up the table, and a more attacking left-back could be on his list.

While Dummett has generally impressed from a defensive point of view, he isn't the modern-day style of full-back in many ways as he doesn't often get forward as much as he should, and he was fiercely criticised by Toon fans on Twitter following the 2-1 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Benitez may want to change that during the close season, and there are a number of British-based left-backs that make a real impact at St James' Park next term and beyond.

Here are three Dummett upgrades Newcastle should be targeting this summer, and they must sign one of them…

It has been something of a rollercoaster ride for Shaw at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho, who has been publicly criticised for his performances on more than one occasion by the Portuguese manager.

The England international appeared to definitely be on his way out during the January transfer window when he found appearances hard to come by in the early months of the season, but a run in the XI towards the end of 2017 and then in to 2018 suggested he perhaps did have a future with the Red Devils.

However, he has only played 135 minutes of Premier League football since the end of February, and it would be best for both parties if he left to play regularly at a club like Newcastle, where he would have the chance to rebuild what is fast becoming a dwindling career.

The 28-year-old left-back is likely to leave Southampton whether they stay up or get relegated this summer, and the Magpies are one of a number of Premier League clubs that have been linked with a move for the England international.

The fact that he could be his country's first-choice option at left-back/left wing-back at the World Cup this summer shows the quality that he has even if he hasn't been at his best this season, and his ability to get up and down the pitch will certainly appeal to Rafa Benitez as he looks to bring more goals to his side.

While Newcastle are clearly a big club, Bertrand may take some convincing that his future lies at St James' Park if the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City are interested, however.

Burnley were linked with a £6m swoop for the Bristol City left-back last week, and with Bristol City failing to reach the Championship play-offs the impressive 24-year-old could be on his way to the Premier League this summer.

Bryan scored five goals and provided a further three assists in 43 league appearances for the Robins this season, and he showed the quality that he has with a brilliant EFL Cup goal in his side’s victory against Manchester United back in December.

If the Magpies could pick him up for £6m he could prove to be a bargain buy, and he certainly wouldn't stretch the transfer budget too far.
