The £8m right-back emerged as one of the finest young talents outside of the Premier League last season with a series of impressive displays for the Elland Road-based outfit.
An injury curtailed his 2012/13 campaign, and saw interest in his signature drop over the summer.
But, now the 20-year-old is returning to fitness, which has alerted Newcastle.
The Magpies take on Leeds in the Capital One Cup tonight, and Alan Pardew is hopeful that Byram will be in action so he can assess the starlet first hand.
The likes of Manchester City and Everton are also keen on the right back, but the ‘Toon’ are hopeful that an increased chance of first-team action at St James’ Park may prove decisive.
Newcastle have earned a reputation for snapping up French talent during the last few transfer windows, but it is believed that Pardew is now keen to draft in some home grown players in a bid to add more steel and determination to his side.
The right-back berth is one that concerns him at the moment, with Mathieu Debuchy short of cover following Danny Simpson’s departure.
