Newcastle are eyeing a surprise £22million bid for Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi, according to the Express.
The 22-year-old is reportedly catching the eye of the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.
Last week Marseille president Jean-Michel Aulas insisted that Batshuayi would not be sold for anything less than £35m in an attempt to ward of interested Premier League clubs.
But it is being reported that the Magpies believe a bid of around £22m will be enough to tempt the Ligue 1 club to selling the Belgium international.
Steve McClaren’s side are facing a fight to stay in the Premier League after winning just two of their opening 13 games of the season, and the former England boss will ultimately need to strengthen his squad further if he is to succeed in steering them away from trouble, despite spending almost £47m in the summer.
Batshuayi has scored nine goals for Marseille this season and is reportedly seen as a worthwhile alternative to the misfiring Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has netted just twice since his £13m arrival from Anderlecht in the summer.
