Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Divock Origi from Liverpool in January as the club are seeking £20m, The Liverpool Echo reports.

What's the word?

Without a win in any of their opening eight matches in the Premier League this season, the pressure is mounting on Rafael Benitez and Newcastle United - with additions in January a necessity to spark life into the Tyneside outfit.

The Newcastle Chronicle stated earlier this week that the Magpies are eyeing a move for Liverpool outcast Divock Origi when the window reopens at the start of 2019 but that switch now seems unlikely, as The Liverpool Echo says the Reds want at least £20m for his services.

That figure would see Newcastle exceed their club-record to land the 23-year-old, who earns £28,000-a-week according to Spotrac, and that does not seem possible given Mike Ashley's reluctance to spend in recent seasons, which will be another cause for frustration from the fans.

Should they splash the cash?

While it is clear Newcastle need a striker capable of scoring goals, splashing a club-record fee on a player who has limited Premier League experience may not be a wise move and could come back to haunt the Magpies.

After selling Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham and loaning Dwight Gayle to West Brom, both of whom have impressed at their new clubs, Newcastle cannot afford to make any further mistakes in the market and should only spend such a high sum on a sure bet.

In reality, a side who already has Joselu, Salomon Rondon, Yoshinori Muto and Ayoze Perez seem unlikely to sign a striker anyway unless departures occur in this area.
