Newcastle ready January move for Reading ace

Alex McCarthy (Reading)Newcastle are readying a January move for Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Royals stopper is widely seen as one of the top ‘keepers in the Championship, and was impressive during the Berkshire club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

Magpies chief Alan Pardew is aware that interest in his current number one Tim Krul from Italy may result in the Dutchman leaving in the not too distant future, and is keen to have a replacement lined up.

McCarthy is seen as the ideal man to fill the void, and could be the subject of a serious offer in the New Year.

The Madejski Stadium ace has represented England at U-21 level, and has been praised for his shot-stopping ability.

It is thought that he would be keen to return to the top tier, which is by no means guaranteed if he stays with Reading.

Krul could be the subject of a £20m offer from Juventus, which would leave the ‘Toon’ with the funds to push through a deal for McCarthy.

The Newcastle man is also a target for Tottenham, who were impressed by his recent heroic display at White Hart Lane.
