Newcastle United were unable to land former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole on deadline day, according to the Express.
Reports in Italian press indicate that the ex-England international rejected the chance to make the switch over to St. James’ Park from Serie A giants Roma.
Cole, who is entering his second season in the Italian capital, has struggled to nail down a first team place, making only 11 appearances in the league since his free transfer from Chelsea.
The 34-year old, who won 107 caps for the Three Lions over the course of 13 years, has been left out of Rudi Garcia’s squad lists for both domestic and European competition.
The arrival of PSG left-back Lucas Digne has pushed him down the pecking order, and looks likely to depart the club.
Despite this, it seems he has rejected the chance to re-unite with the former England boss Steve McClaren as he takes charge of the Magpies this season.
Newcastle have been active in the market this season, bringing in the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Giorgino Wijnaldum and Florian Thauvin.
However, Cole will not be joining the ranks at the North East side.
