Newcastle set transfer sights on twice-relegated star

Newcastle are ready to offer Leroy Fer a route back into the Premier League following his second successive relegation, according to reports from Metro.

The Netherlands international was a part of QPR’s unsuccessful battle against the drop last term, after joining the club from Norwich last summer when they slipped into the Championship.

However, his worrying relegation trend has not put Steve McClaren off of Fer, and the recently arrived St James’ Park gaffer is eager to lure the 25-year-old to the North East.

The Magpies chief has already worked with the midfield ace – who scored at last summer’s World Cup – at FC Twente and is a big fan of his abilities.

Should Fer join, he would become Newcastle’s second Dutch recruit of the summer, Georginio Wijnaldum has already signed from PSV Eindhoven, and would add to the Oranje ranks at the club alongside Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita and Daryl Janmaat.
