According to Italian outlet Calciomercato Web, Fulham, Wolves, Southampton and Leicester City are amongst the Premier League clubs interested in signing Inter Milan outcast Joao Mario in January.

What’s the word?

Mario is yet to feature for Inter Milan so far this season and is clearly surplus to requirements at the Serie A club. However, the 40-cap Portugal international remains a top class player who could have an impact in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old midfielder needs to get back to playing regular football at a high level as soon as possible and should therefore force through an exit from the San Siro in January.

Considering his diminished status at Inter, Mario would likely even be available for far less than his £18 million Transfermarkt valuation.

Before any of their Premier League rivals can beat them to this potential winter window bargain, Newcastle United ought to make a move to seal the services of Mario ahead of the second half of the season.

An opportunity they can’t afford to miss

The Magpies are currently rooted to the bottom of the table and remain without a win so far this season. Rafa Benitez’s squad is short of top level quality and strength in depth. The addition of Mario would go a long way towards adding some dynamism and flair to his midfield contingent.

What’s more, a switch to St James’ Park would guarantee Mario regular football - making this a move that would suit all involved.

Failure to add talent to their ranks in the winter window will likely result in relegation for the Tyneside outfit, therefore, opportunities to pick up players of Mario’s quality at bargain prices cannot be missed by Newcastle.

What do you think, Newcastle fans - should the club fight for Mario’s signature in January?
