According to O Jogo, Porto attacker Yacine Brahimi is set to become a free agent at the end of this season as he is yet to agree to new terms with the club on his current contract that expires in less than 12 months.
The prospect of losing Brahimi for nothing must be a great worry for Porto, who may instead opt to settle for a cut-price fee for the versatile wide-attacker in January.
Many clubs around Europe would certainly be keen to take on the 28-year-old, especially if his services could be secured at a bargain price. The Algeria international has a Transfermarkt valuation of £23.4 million. If he could be prised away from the Portuguese club for significantly less than that during the winter transfer window then that would represent an excellent bit of business.
Brahimi has the quality needed to have an impact in the Premier League, and of all the English top flight sides who could benefit from his presence in the squad, Newcastle would be wise to ensure that they win the race for his signature.
Rafa Benitez’s side have struggled greatly for goals since their return to the first tier last season. Summer loan signing Salomon Rondon has done little so far to suggest that he can greatly alleviate the Magpies’ goalscoring woes.
In order to secure their survival in the division, the Tyneside club may well have to go digging for an affordable yet prolific forward in the market once again in January. Brahimi could well be the best available option.
The winger certainly has end product in his game, having racked up 44 goals and 35 assists in 177 appearances for Porto. If Newcastle could acquire him for a fair price, Brahimi would definitely be worth a roll of the dice.
What do you think, Newcastle fans – would you be happy to see the club pursue Brahimi in January?
