Mario Gotze’s career trajectory has been in freefall for some time now, which has seen him descend from being the golden boy of German football to barely being able to get a kick for Borussia Dortmund.

What’s the story?

The undoubted highlight of Gotze’s career to date was scoring the winning goal of the 2014 World Cup final, as Germany overcame Argentina in Brazil.

Since then, however, there’s been far less for the 26-year-old to celebrate. Having failed to prove himself as a long-term star for Bayern Munich, he returned to Dortmund in 2016. Indifferent form has seen him slip down the pecking order at the Westfalenstadion though, to the extent that Gotze has not been involved in a single one of the club’s four Bundesliga matches so far this season and slipped out of the squad entirely for the clash with Hoffenheim last time out.

Gotze’s career is in desperate need of a revival and a change of scene, and indeed league, would likely be the best thing for the attacking midfielder at this stage.

Newcastle would be wise to offer the Germany international that lifeline in January.

A rare opportunity for Newcastle

Given his current status as an outcast at Dortmund, Gotze would likely be available either on loan or for a small fee in January, despite his Transfermarkt valuation of £16.2 million.

If the midfielder could rediscover his best form at St James’ Park then he could be transformative for Rafa Benitez’s attacking contingent.

The Magpies won’t get too many opportunities to sign a World Cup final goalscorer and winner of 26 years of age for a reasonable fee, so they should not let this chance slip through their fingers. A player of Gotze’s proven quality is worth a gamble, so the Premier League club should roll the dice.

What do you think, Newcastle fans - would you be happy to see your club sign Gotze in January?
