Newcastle star frustrated by lack of move

Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle)Yohan Cabaye was forced to stay at Newcastle despite deadline day interest from Arsenal, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The French midfielder had been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates over the course of the last few weeks, and had even been excluded from the Magpies’ match day squads amid rumours surrounding his future.

Speculation suggested that the Gunners may secure a deal for the 27-year-old, but a deal could not be reached between the two clubs.

The Toon were reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £20m for his services, a figure that Arsenal were unwilling to match.

Arsene Wenger opened the bidding with a £10m move a few weeks ago, but Newcastle officials were shocked by the Londoners’ valuation of their star man.

Arsenal instead turned their attention to Mesut Ozil, who moved to North London late on a club record £42.5m deal.

Newcastle endured a quite transfer window, with Loic Remy the only arrival at St James’ Park.

The Frenchman joined on a season-long loan from QPR, who were relegated last season.

Moves for the likes of Bafetimbi Gomis fell through, while long-term target Darren Bent opted to join Fulham.
