Papiss Cisse has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons this summer with the controversy over him refusing to wear Newcastle’s shirt while the sponsor was a money-lending company. Cisse eventually managed to sort the dispute out with the Magpies and is a regular in the team again after he was overshadowed somewhat by Demba Ba last season.
Cisse has now gone one step further than earning back the respect of the Tyneside faithful. At the weekend he invited a small group of lucky Newcastle fans for a barbecue at his house. To be fair, Cisse does have previous when it comes to acts of good will. After a young fan sent him a welcome to Newcastle card upon his arrival in the North-East, Cisse actually went round to the boy’s house unannounced.
The good will of the Senegalese forward seems to have returned with the picture proving it actually did happen. When asked about his hospitality and willingness to integrate with the fans Cisse simply replied: “For me, engaging with the fans is an obligation, a duty if you like. To me when I put on the shirt it is for the fans.”
Fans were treated to a kickabout in the garden with one of their heroes as well as a game or two of FIFA 13 in what would have been an unforgettable experience for them. More footballers need to take a leaf out of Papiss’ book!
