Newcastle striker plays down starring role

Newcastle striker Papiss CisseNewcastle striker Papiss Cisse insists that he is just an average man, despite being placed on a pedestal by adoring Magpies fans.

The 27-year-old was signed by Alan Pardew during the January transfer window last season and scored 13 times in 14 games to immediately win over the hearts of the Newcastle faithful.

A top-six Premier League finish saw the club secure a Europa League place, but they have struggled to find that form once again this season, sitting six points away from the relegation zone with four games remaining.

The Senegalese international has still been one of the stand-out players this term, scoring stoppage times goals that have helped to keep the club’s head just above water.

“Sometimes people look at me as a star but I am not a star,” Cisse said.

“I am just a normal player, a man who plays football.”
