Newcastle’s hopes of luring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Premier League this summer have suffered a setback, with news that Anzhi Makhachkala are readying a £25million bid for the forward, according to reports from talkSPORT.
Magpies chief Alan Pardew is said to have placed the Saint-Etienne star at the very top of his transfer wish list, and was believed to be willing to dedicate a large chunk of his budget to securing a deal.
However, Anzhi are now in the race for the Gabon international, and have the spending power to blow Newcastle out of the water.
The Russians are willing to offer around £25m for the 23-year-old, a figure that his current employers will find hard to resist.
Toon owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to consider matching such a sum, with his policy of snapping up promising stars for reduced fees well known.
Aubameyang was one of Ligue 1’s top talents last term, scoring 19 goals as Saint-Etienne narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.
A number of other Premier League sides have been linked with the versatile attacker, including both Arsenal and Aston Villa.
Aubameyang is rumoured to be keen on a return to former club AC Milan, but he could be tempted by Anzhi, who will likely offer him a bumper contract.
Newcastle fans, would it be a big blow to miss out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?
