Newcastle to step up transfer move for star hit-man

Alfred Finnbogason (Heerenveen)Newcastle are ready to up their interest in Heerenveen striker Alfred Finnbogason ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports from the Sunday People.

The Magpies have been interested in the razor-sharp Iceland international for some time, and are now ready to push ahead with a move amid fears that they may miss out on West Brom’s Shane Long.

The Republic of Ireland international is believed to be one of Alan Pardew’s top targets heading into the New Year, but the Baggies man’s recent upturn in form has prompted worries that he may be pushed out of the club’s reach.

Long – who almost joined Hull over the summer – is being linked with a host of Premier League sides, and Newcastle are wary of being sucked into a bidding war.

Instead they could turn to Finbogasson, who has been in excellent form in the Dutch top flight.

The 24-year-old has already netted 14 league goals this term, and is being hailed as one of the Eredivisie’s top stars.

Pardew is keen to add support for Loic Remy over the winter, with the on-loan Frenchman currently one of the North East outfit’s only major threats in the final third.

Finnbogason almost helped his side to World Cup qualification last months, and is said to be open to a big move.
