England manager Gareth Southgate could afford to be slightly more relaxed in his squad selection given that the hard work of qualifying for next summer’s World Cup is over.
For friendlies against Germany and Brazil, the Three Lions boss called up youngsters Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Joe Gomez, while regulars including Daniel Sturridge and Chris Smalling were left out.
Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles failed to make the cut, which has frustrated his club supporters.
The 23-year-old Magpies captain has been a solid figure in Rafael Benitez’s back line this season, starting all but one of the club’s Premier League games.
The defender was recently rewarded with a new long-term contract, but it seems that his England dream will have to wait.
After the squad was announced, Newcastle fans vented their disappointment on Twitter.
How Lascelles hasn't made the England squad yet Loftus-Cheek and Tammy has because they're on loan from Chelsea is laughable.

Baffles me how Jamaal Lascelles can be overlooked for this @England squad! Maybe if he was connected to a top 6 club he’d get a look in!

Meanwhile, Lascelles and his teammates are preparing to face Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday as they hope to bounce back from a recent 1-0 defeat to Burnley.
