Many Newcastle United supporters have called for Steve Bruce to keep Matty Longstaff in his starting line-up to face Chelsea after the teenage midfielder scored the winning goal against Manchester United.

Bruce will be without the suspended Isaac Hayden for the Magpies' trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend, with the former Arsenal man set to serve the second of his three-game ban on Saturday.

Jonjo Shelvey or Ki Sung-Yueng could be offered a recall if Bruce opts for experience in West London over Longstaff, who made his Premier League debut in the Magpies' 1-0 win at home to Manchester United.

Many Toon fans feel Longstaff proved enough against the Red Devils to warrant another start when league action recommences after the international break, and in doing so, appear to support Bruce's rumoured plans for the 19-year-old.

The Northern Echo reported on Tuesday that Bruce is set to stick with Longstaff over Shelvey or Ki, as he wants to see the teenager cement a place ahead of the former Liverpool man, as well as the currently suspended Hayden.

Bruce was claimed to have thought long and hard about the decision but was impressed by Longstaff's accomplished display alongside his brother Sean last time out.

The teenager's energy and mobility in the centre is said to have helped his chances of earning a second league outing against the Blues, as Bruce feels those attributes set him aside from his positional rivals.

Many Newcastle fans would appear to agree with those claims that Longstaff's efforts against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils were impressive enough to warrant another start.
