Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and now that England’s World Cup dream is over, some fans are suggesting that Gareth Southgate selected the wrong team.
A section of Newcastle United supporters believe that Jonjo Shelvey would have made a big difference to the team’s midfield had he been part of the squad.
The 26-year-old had a decent season for the Magpies as he made 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and racking up three assists.
There were times throughout the campaign, though, when his discipline was lacking.
In fact, Shelvey was sent off twice last season, and he clearly did not impress Southgate enough to make the Three Lions squad.

On Wednesday night, England were knocked out of the tournament in Russia at the semi-final stage as they were beaten 2-1 by Croatia in extra time.
After the final whistle, some Newcastle fans suggested that the team would have been better off with Shelvey as a midfield option.

I’m not saying Shelvey had to be included – our run to the SF’s justifies Southgate’s inclusions – but I think we’d have carried much more of a threat last night if we were able to bring on Shelvey for Henderson. Dier sub never worked. Immediately lost a grip of play.#ENG #NUFC
