For the majority of transfer deadline day, it was widely reported that Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic was on the verge of returning to former club Anderlecht.

The Serbian has struggled for game time at St James' Park this season, making just six appearances in the Premier League, none of which were starts.

According to Sky Sports, Mitrovic travelled to Belgium to finalise a return to the club that he left in 2015.

However, the proposed transfer collapsed due to Anderlecht's failure to sell another player to fund the deal.

All was not completely lost for Mitrovic, though, as he managed to seal another move, but this time it was a loan switch to Championship side Fulham.

Some Newcastle fans have been left disappointed in the club's decision to offload Mitrovic, who joined the Magpies two-and-a-half years ago.

Manager Rafael Benitez recruited Leicester City forward Islam Slimani on loan for the rest of the season, but groups of supporters have expressed sadness in the club not giving Mitrovic a chance.
