One area of the Newcastle United team that was not addressed in the summer was at left-back.
Rafael Benitez once again had a frustrating window in which he was in the dar over transfer funds.
In the end, the Spaniard brought in additions to central defence, midfield and attack.
However, question marks still remain over the left-back options, of which there are very few.
Paul Dummett is currently first choice, but if the 26-year-old suffers an injury, Benitez does not have much quality to call upon as a replacement.
On Twitter, supporters have proven that there is a divide among the fanbase.
He’s not good enough 😂

Championship player at best. Making the most of his talent but simply not good enough. Offers nothing going forward and lacks awareness in defense. Tries hard though and loves a slide tackle

Every manager seems to love him 🤷♂️

The simple fact is Dummett is very average & limited. His improvement is all down to one thing, and that is being coached by Rafa Benitez. That’s what Great coaches do they improve players.

Paul Dummett converted me last season. Our defensive record with him in the team compared to without was too big to be ignored.
Stat about mins played surprised me though. Was he not out for a chunk of last season? Would’ve thought Lascelles would have had more mins.

Proved me wrong 👍🏻

I’d rather we have someone else at left back
It showed on Sunday, he cannot play wing back & cannot go forward
his crossing is league 1 at best
Boyhood club? i don’t care, If you want reality? the truth is? I can only see Dummett starting for Burnley, Brighton, Cardiff, that’s it

But then rafa wants a new left back to replace him not cover!

The Premier League season has not kicked off in the best way for Newcastle as they are yet to pick up a victory.
Benitez’s men were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend of the season, and they followed that up with a goalless draw against Cardiff City.
On Sunday, the Magpies put in a strong display for the visit of Chelsea to St James’ Park, but in the end they suffered a 2-1 loss.
