Newcastle United fans tend to take transfer rumours with a pinch of salt considering the disappointment that they have suffered before.

Club owner Mike Ashley has once again caused frustration by failing to release significant funds for Rafael Benitez to spend on new players.

The Magpies have managed to do some activity, though, as they have secured deals for Martin Dubravka, Kenedy, Ki-Sung yueng, Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto and Salomon Rondon.

However, a number of those have been free transfers or loan deals, which makes the spending figure relatively low.

According to The Times, Newcastle are keen to bring in Crystal Palace's Jairo Riedewald before Thursday's deadline.

The versatile Dutchman, who can play at centre-back, left-back or as a defensive midfielder, has been at Selhurst Park since last summer.

It was not until the second half of the season when the 21-year-old impressed, but injury has hampered his progress.

On Twitter, some Newcastle fans have been discussing whether the club would be making the right call in signing the defence-minded youngster, who is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt.
