Radio pundit and former Rangers star Ally McCoist has claimed that the Ibrox side are bigger than Newcastle United.
The legendary striker was speaking after reports linking current Gers boss Steven Gerrard with the vacant manager’s position at St James’ Park.
Rafa Benitez has left the club and the decision makers at Newcastle are currently on the hunt for someone who can take the club forward, with The Telegraph reporting that Gerrard was on a shortlist that also included Patrick Vieira and Mikel Arteta.
“The club is in state!”… The Playmakers give their first impressions on receiving the sudden news of Rafa Benitez’s departure from Newcastle United. See what they have to say here…
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist suggested that such a move for the Ibrox manager would be a step down and not the right thing for his career, with his reasoning being that Rangers are a bigger club than the Magpies.
As you can imagine, they aren’t comments that have gone down particularly well with the Geordie faithful, with many taking to Twitter on Thursday to share their thoughts on it all…

how can a club founded in 2012 be bigger than us?
— ?Matthew Wray? (@StellerMatt) June 27, 2019
Arguably they could be and have had much more success over the years – but they have though won those trophies in what really is a minor league. No comparison with the Premiership or even the Championship.

Debatable but the league they play in is no better than the conference.

It’s a silly argument .U can’t deny rangers fan base and history however the league is awful and this will always hamper them. Stronger league and it would be comparable but at moment it’s silly . He forgets that the rangers captain is someone deemed not good enough for @NUFC
