Newcastle United hope to pip Spurs to signature of French starlet

Premier League strugglers Newcastle United have identified Marseille midfielder Florian Thauvin as one of their top summer transfer targets – but will have to fork out at least £15 million to land the player, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Frenchman has been left out of Marseille’s squad for this weekend’s game against Metz after reportedly claiming that he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur.

It is believed that the Ligue 1 outfit – who are currently fourth in the table – and Spurs have initiated negotiations in recent weeks and Thauvin is desperate to join them but Tottenham have baulked at the asking price and are looking for a cheaper deal.

The North London club’s reluctance to match the £15 million price paves the way for the Magpies – who already boast a significant number of French footballers on their roster – to make a move for a highly promising youngster they have been interested in since his days at Lille.
