Borussia Dortmund confirmed the arrival of Paco Alcacer from Barcelona on a loan deal on Tuesday, but Newcastle United should have swooped.

What's the word?

Alcacer has been on the fringes of the Catalan giants for some time, and it is not hard to see why given the level of attacking talent within the ranks.

Last season, the 24-year-old started just eight La Liga matches, but he managed to find the back of the net in that time.

To give the attacker a new lease of life, Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund signed him on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.

Have Newcastle made a mistake?

In order to boost the club’s attacking prowess, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez recruited Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion.

The North-East outfit agreed a loan deal and in turn sent Dwight Gayle to The Hawthorns on a similar arrangement.

Rondon earned his first start at the weekend in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea, so he has not been given much time to prove his ability yet.

However, Alcacer already looks like a better option as he has speed and skill that has contributed to prolific spells in the past.

Before moving to Barcelona, the forward scored an impressive 43 goals and racked up 17 assists for Valencia.

Wages could have potentially have become an issue, but Newcastle should have definitely tried to nab the Spaniard’s signature.
