According to the printed Sunday Mirror (04/11, page 66) - reported via HITC - Southampton, Wolves and Crystal Palace are all monitoring Leeds striker Kemar Roofe ahead of potentially launching a bid to sign him in the January transfer window.

What’s the word?

Roofe has blossomed under the management of Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road this season and has been in prolific form in front of goal. His seven goals from just 10 league outings has helped the Yorkshire outfit to the top of the Championship table.

Given the 25-year-old’s impressive goalscoring exploits it’s not at all surprising that a clutch of Premier League clubs have begun to show interest in the in-form attacker. A move to any of these sides in January would, of course, represent a short cut to the top tier for the forward.

Before any of their Premier League rivals can land Roofe, Newcastle United must enter the race for his signature.

An exciting addition

The Magpies have been struggling for goals so far this season with just seven scored in the league to date. The likes of Joselu, Ayoze Perez and summer signings Salomon Rondon and Yoshinori Muto have all failed to regularly capitalise upon goalscoring opportunities.

This lack of efficiency in front of goal has led to the club’s present struggles, as Rafa Benitez’s side are currently hovering just above the relegation zone with only one win to their name so far. With that in mind, Newcastle could desperately do with a new goalscorer in January.

Roofe’s confidence and finishing ability would certainly make the Magpies more potent in the final third. What’s more, the Englishman’s versatility could make him a real asset to the squad at St James’ Park. With a Transfermarkt valuation of just £3.15 million Roofe could potentially be picked up at a bargain price, although Leeds will want a big fee if they are to consider selling him halfway through what could be their best chance at going up in years.

What do you think, Newcastle fans - would you be excited to welcome Roofe to St James’ in January?
