Newcastle United were ultimately priced out of a January move for Borussia Dortmund attacker Maximilian Philipp, according to The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

What's the word, then?

Philipp was one of a number of players linked with a move to Newcastle during the January transfer window.

According to The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder, Newcastle were keen to complete an initial loan deal, which could be made permanent at the end of the season.

However, it has been reported that Dortmund 'wanted a big price inserted into an eventual fee', which led to Newcastle dropping their interest.

The 24-year-old is a huge talent, but has only managed one goal in 14 Bundesliga appearances during the 2018-19 campaign.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle return with an offer at the end of the season, but it seems unlikely after what occurred in the January transfer window.

Should Newcastle go back for Philipp?

Once regarded as one of the hottest young talents in Germany, Philipp made 10 appearances for his country's Under-21 side, but is yet to make his senior bow.

A nine-goal season for Freiburg led to a move to Dortmund in the summer of 2017 and he managed nine goals in all competitions for the German giants last season.

The versatile attacker has found it difficult to overcome a muscular problem in recent months, however, and has not scored in the league since October.

Dortmund had every right to put a high valuation on Philipp when considering his talent, but Newcastle were also correct to hold their ground.

Philipp is a fine talent, but unless both parties are open to negotiation then it seems unlikely that a move will be rekindled in this summer's transfer window.
