Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame scored his first goals for the club in a 6-0 thrashing of Preston North End last night, which saw the Championship leaders advance to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, and Diame wants to face a familiar foe in the next round.
Diame joined Newcastle from Hull City in the summer, having scored the goal in the Play-Off final that sent the Tigers back into the Premier League, and the Senegalese international told Newcastle’s official website he wants to face his former employers in the next round...
“Every single game we go out to win it, and the team are working well. I hope we are going to play against Hull – I saw they won 2-1 [against Bristol City], so it would be nice if we could have a draw against Hull and play them. That would be nice for me.”
Should Newcastle manage to avoid the big-guns in the next round, with Liverpool and Arsenal having already sealed their place in tonight’s draw, Rafael Benitez’ side will certainly fancy their chances of advancing to the two-legged semi-finals.
Whilst promotion back to the Premier League remains Newcastle’s priority this season, decent cup runs could inspire additional feel-good factor around the city and reward the loyal fans for what has been a turbulent few years on Tyneside.
Newcastle will find out their opponents in the quarter-final after tonight’s showcase clash between rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.
