Shola Ameobi came through the youth system at Newcastle United before going on to represent the first team on 392 occasions in all competitions.
The centre-forward struck 75 goals for the Magpies - including 43 in 295 Premier League outings before leaving St James' Park in the summer of 2014.
It was Ameobi's 38th birthday on Saturday, and Newcastle's official Twitter account was on hand with a special message for the former forward.
The reaction from the fans, though, was mixed, to say the least.
Indeed, whilst a number of the supporters were keen to pay tribute to Ameobi - who retired as a player last year after leaving Notts County - others offered a harsher reaction to the post on social media.
Ameobi has previously upset the fans with his comments on Newcastle owner Mike Ashley - he insisted that he deserved "credit" for running the club in a "sustainable" way - and it seems that a number of supporters have still not forgiven the former Nigeria international.
