Newcastle are absolutely desperate for a clinical goalscorer, and they can rescue their season by moving for Tottenham target Luka Jovic in January.

What's the story?

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham and Chelsea are both eyeing a move for Jovic.

Tottenham are still on the hunt for a striker to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, as the England captain has suffered ankle injuries in each of the last two seasons due to the sheer amount of games he has played.

Neither of Fernando Llorente or Vincent Janssen have solved the problem, and the report claims they have now turned their attentions to Jovic.

Newcastle meanwhile are going to be in serious trouble if they don’t find some goals, and the promise of regular playing time could tempt Jovic to choose Tyneside over North London.

Would he be a good signing?

Jovic made his name as a teenager at Red Star Belgrade, scoring 12 times in 42 league appearances. He earned his big move to Benfica in 2016, and signed a two-year loan deal with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt last summer.

The German club do have the option to sign him permanently for a nominal fee next summer, so Benfica would love to cash in quickly in January and grab themselves a tidy profit.

The 20 year-old has taken the Bundesliga by storm this season, scoring five times in a 7-1 win last weekend. He has nine goals in 12 games in all competitions this season, which is more than the entire Newcastle squad.

Jovic is very athletic, extremely hard-working, comfortable on the ball, and most importantly of all he just knows how to score goals. His predatory instincts at such a young age are remarkable, and his value will probably triple if he has a couple of good seasons with the Magpies.
