Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a move for Mexico international midfielder Hector Herrera, and Newcastle should take advantage by swooping for Victor Wanyama.

What's the word?

According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Tottenham sent scouts to watch Porto’s recent win over Tondela.

While the report didn’t specify who they were there to watch, Tottenham were repeatedly linked with Herrera this summer, and the midfielder’s contract expires next summer.

CM Jornal claimed recently that 28-year-old has rejected three separate contract offers from Porto, and with Mousa Dembele set to leave North London when his contract expires fans are calling for a bargain move for Herrera.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are yet to pick up a win this season, thanks in no small part for their failure to find a proper midfield partner for Jonjo Shelvey.

Shelvey looked superb in the first half at Old Trafford this weekend when he had the freedom to attack, and signing Wanyama could bring the best out of the English midfielder.

Why would he be a good signing?

Newcastle fans will feel rightfully aggrieved that Shelvey has not been included in the latest England squad, as there aren’t many midfielders in the Premier League with his vision and technical ability.

The 26-year-old had clearly been told to get forward more in Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United, and his incredible first half display could be a regular occurrence with a player like Wanyama sitting next to him.

Wanyama is bottom of the midfield pecking order in North London, and the possible signing of Herrera will surely make him consider his future.

The 50-cap Kenyan international is sensational at reading the game and breaking up opposition attacks, which would allow Shelvey to focus more on picking apart the opposition defence rather than protecting his own.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Mike Ashley will actually back Rafael Benitez in January, but if he does then Wanyama would be a perfect starting point.
