Newcastle signed two strikers this summer but they are still short of goals, so should the Magpies move for soon-to-be free agent Olivier Giroud?
According to The Northern Echo, Rafael Benitez is still very interested in bringing Tammy Abraham to St. James’ Park, so the Spaniard is clearly very keen to sign another striker in January, despite the summer moves for Yoshinori Muto and Salomon Rondon.
While Abraham will add more pace to the side, the boss may be better served looking at Giroud, who will be out of contract at Chelsea next summer.
The Blues are expected to pursue a superstar striker in the near future, meaning Giroud could soon be surplus to requirements.
The 32 year-old has bags of experience, the strength and link-up play to be Rafa’s big number nine, and of course the unique knack of scoring absolute wondergoals.

While the arrival of a marquee striker like Mauro Icardi would likely put Giroud out in the cold, the French international has proved he is still a top-level player this season, putting himself firmly at the top of the pecking order for Maurizio Sarri.
The towering striker is trusted just as much for his ability to make those around him better as his goalscoring exploits, and he was used mostly as a facilitator in Didier Deschamps’ France side this summer.
However, he still knows how to stick the ball in the back of the net, and this is why Benitez should look his way instead of to the Championship.
Abraham has 12 Championship goals this season and grabbed 23 on loan with Bristol City in the 2016-17 season, but Championship goalscorers rarely carry their excellence into the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Giroud has scored 77 times and added 32 assists in his 207 Premier League appearances, meaning he contributes to a goal more than once every two games.
Fans at St. James’ Park are absolutely loving the form of Rondon, but Giroud is far better than the Venezuelan, and Rafa would surely fix the Magpies’ goalscoring woes if he had both of them at his disposal.
So, Newcastle fans, would you back a move for Giroud? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
