Palace join Newcastle in race for striker

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent

Crystal Palace have moved ahead of Fulham and Newcastle in the race to sign Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 29-year-old’s future has been the topic of constant speculation at Villa Park, with Paul Lambert’s side rejecting three bids from the Cottagers for the former England forward already.

Newcastle have also failed to match the club’s £6million asking price, and now Premier League new boys Palace have the forward in their sights as they look to significantly strengthen before the big kick off in under two weeks.

They have been encouraged by noises from Bent’s camp, who reckon the Tooting-born forward would be interested in a return to South London.

The Eagles look set to add one forward to their ranks at least, by completing the loan signing of Arsenal forward Marouane Chamakh.

The Moroccan has endured a torrid couple of seasons at the Emirates, with this set to be his second loan spell after moving to Upton Park for a spell last season.

Another player of interest to Palace is said to be Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker, with the England man reportedly surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane.

Although they look as though they will have to do battle with Parker’s former club West Ham for his signature, as Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan recently declared the club he would ‘love Scott back’, but only if the clubs finances allowed it.
