Pardew compares Cisse to Newcastle legend

Papiss Cisse Newcastle StrikerNewcastle manager Alan Pardew says that Papiss Cisse’s goal against Southampton reminded him of club icon Alan Shearer.

The Senegalese striker netted a dipping 25-yard volley just before half-time, to give the Toon a two goal lead.

Pardew compared the strike to Shearer’s stunning effort against Everton in 2002, in which the former captain launched an unstoppable drive from outside of the area:

“It was a wonder goal, an Alan Shearer-type moment from Cisse.” He is quoted by The Sun.

“That will certainly get in his top 10. It reminded me of that goal from Alan many years ago here, that dipping volley.

“As soon as he hit it you sensed that it was in. And for sure, the net ripples. He’s got that in him, he can get all types of goals. But that was a really great one today.”

Cisse has shown an eye for the spectacular in the past, with a swerving half-volley against Chelsea last season capping an impressive end to the campaign from the 27-year-old.

Newcastle have struggled this term, with the demands of European football and a series of injuries to key players exposing a lack of depth in their squad.

Some poor results had seen them slip into contention for relegation, but a recent revival has moved them up to 14th, six points clear of the drop zone.

Pardew is looking to maintain their form and sneak a top half finish:

“It was a very important victory because of our position in the league and Southampton’s position. We’ve put ourselves in a position to attack 10th. That was the importance of the victory today.”
