Pardew expected more from Newcastle’s young talents

Alan Pardew has revealed he overestimated the strength of his squad in the summer and that he regrets not signing more players in the build-up to Newcastle’s troubled season.

The Toon boss is hoping to sign a striker and a centre-back this month to strengthen the squad enough to ensure they do not suffer relegation to the Championship.

The Magpies have lost 11 of their last 14 matches in all competitions and sit just two points above the relegation zone ahead of their visit to Norwich City at the weekend.

Discussing his side’s worrying predicament, Pardew has said he expected more from the club’s young players this term, and he has accused some of them of not working hard enough to improve.

“It’s frustrating the teams I’ve been able to put out because I didn’t envisage we would be putting these types of teams out,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “I thought they would be stronger.

“The players who should have developed from the Under-21s, I can’t even begin to explain the frustration I have. The frustration of our fans, the trust we built up last season, has started to erode away and we need to repair that over the second half of the season.

“My mentality towards it is to make sure everybody is doing their jobs 100 per cent, keeping on top of my stuff, trying to lift my players and kick a couple of them up the bum.

“Particularly one or two of the younger players, the work ethic needs to improve and they need to improve as individuals. Those younger players have not produced what I wanted them to produce so they’re going to have to work harder or they are going to have to leave this football club.”
