Obertan struck three minutes after the break, putting the finishing touches to some neat build up play from Sammy and Shola Ameobi, as the Magpies narrowly saw off the Belgian side at St James’ Park, to extend their lead at the top of Group D to three points.
After the game Pardew paid tribute to the French winger, saying the club owe him a sense of gratitude for his performances in the competition this season and hinted that he could be set for more first team opportunities in the future.
“He’s still only 23. He has a fantastic future,” Pardew said
“We owe him a big debt for the last two European games because we wouldn’t have won without him.”
“He’s been terrific for us and hopefully he’ll play a bigger part in the Premier League as we go along.”
