Rafael Benitez is reportedly aware of Luke Shaw’s situation at Manchester United and Newcastle are pondering a move.
Shaw’s relationship with Jose Mourinho has completely broken down, after the young full back was withdrawn at half time in Manchester United’s FA Cup win over Brighton.
Mourinho attacked Shaw after the match, and not for the first time, claiming the youngster lacked class, personality and tactical nous.
Several Premier League clubs are chasing the 22 year-old, with The Times reporting that Everton and Spurs are leading the way.
Still, the Chronicle claims that Benitez enquired about a move for Shaw in January but was put off by Manchester United’s £20million asking price. If Shaw is available this summer, Benitez could look to revive his interest.
There’s no doubt Luke Shaw is a player that’s low on confidence. Whether or not you believe Mourinho that the young full back is not doing his part to earn his place, it’s clear to see he would benefit from a change in scenery.
Shaw was one of Europe’s hottest prospects before his horrific leg injury in 2015, but he has never really looked the same since. Still, his technical ability and strength would make him a solid component in any team, especially one that is looking to move on from relegation scraps and restore its former glory.
Newcastle might not have the wages or opportunities on offer that Shaw wants, but if there’s anyone that can get him back to his best it’s surely Rafa Benitez.
