One particularly long-running transfer saga this summer revolved around Newcastle United’s pursuit of Salomon Rondon. Ultimately, in order to land the West Brom striker on loan, the Magpies had to allow their own forward, Dwight Gayle, to head to the Hawthorns in return on another temporary agreement.
The Tyneside club were pleased with this business at the time, but the Venezuelan hitman has subsequently failed to hit the ground running at St James’ Park.
One of the big problems Rafa Benitez’s side faced last season was a lack of goals being scored. This time around things seem no better, with Newcastle having only registered four goals in their first seven games of the campaign – only Huddersfield have managed less.
Gayle, meanwhile, has already found the back of the net five times for the Baggies.
If Rondon can’t start firing soon, then the decision to swap Gayle for his services would have to go down as a huge error on Newcastle’s part and could even go on to cost them their top-flight status.
When we asked Newcastle fans if they already regretted allowing Gayle to depart, 57% said yes. See the full results below.
