Last week, a report from Uruguayan outlet Ovacion claimed Newcastle are first in line to secure Abel Hernandez on a free signing this summer – but would it be a good move?

Rafael Benitez has completely transformed Newcastle’s season with his organisational skills, but the Magpies are still short of goals.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been in fine form on loan at Fulham but his relationship with Benitez seems to be fractured, and Islam Slimani has not impressed on his loan stay from Leicester.

That just leaves Dwight Gayle and Joselu, one of which has only managed to score consistently in the Championship, and the other hasn’t been involved in a goal since January.

Given the lack of firepower on Tyneside, it is no surprise that the Magpies are getting linked with strikers, but fans seem to be split over the links to Hernandez.

The 29-cap Uruguay international has scored eight and assisted two in ten Championship appearances this season after returning from a lengthy injury layoff.

59 per cent of fans said they would back the free signing of Hernandez, and you can check out the full results of the poll below…
