Revealed: 64% of Newcastle fans think selling Mitrovic is a mistake

Newcastle look all set to dump Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer after a misfiring World Cup from the big number nine, but nearly two thirds of fans think it’s a big mistake.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Mitrovic was in the shop window during the World Cup, as Rafael Benitez has his heart set on selling the 23 year-old. He is expected to be on the market for around £20m this summer.

The beastly fan favourite put in quite a shift in Serbia’s first match against Costa Rica, but couldn’t find the goal to cap off his performance.

Although his side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Switzerland, Mitrovic got the goal his performance deserved, powering in a header to give Serbia an early lead.

He had his worst performance of the tournament against Brazil though, missing a golden chance from close range before getting a classic Mitrovic yellow card for dissent.

The World Cup showed the best and worst of the striker, as he dominated in the air and bullied defenders. He also scored just once from 14 shots though, a truly miserable conversion rate, and picked up two yellow cards in three games.

Unfortunately, the very nature of what endears him to fans is also what has left Benitez with no choice but to sell him, and fans think it’s a big mistake.
