Not too long ago, the notion of Gotze signing for a side like Newcastle United, whose priority this season is to avoid relegation from the Premier League, would have been inconceivable. Much has changed for Gotze, who earns £150,000-a-week according to Silly Season, in the intervening years since his famous goal won Germany the 2014 World Cup though.
Now, the 26-year-old finds himself to be an outcast at Borussia Dortmund. His form has been on a continual slide since he re-joined the club in 2016 and he didn’t even make the matchday squad for the last Bundesliga match, never mind the starting XI.
It seems as though a change would be the best thing for Gotze’s career at this stage, but the continent’s elite level clubs are unlikely to be attracted to the attacking-midfielder at this time.
The Magpies could capitalise upon this situation by offering Gotze a chance to revive his ailing career at St James’ Park. If Rafa Benitez could get the once-lauded playmaker back to his best then the Premier League outfit would have secured a major coup, and even though he may not currently be the player he was, he would still be the best signing of the Mike Ashley era.
Buying Gotze outright would be a gamble, but probably one worth taking. Otherwise, Dortmund would likely be open to a loan deal for the No. 10 in January which would represent little risk to the Magpies.
We asked Newcastle fans if they’d like to see the club bring Gotze to English shores, despite his long-standing poor form, and 80% said yes. See the full results below.
