Leeds United have reportedly made out-of-contract Hull City star Abel Hernandez their top striker target this summer, and we suggested that Newcastle United should look to hijack any deal.

The Uruguay international is available on a free with a new deal at the KCOM Stadium looking unlikely to be agreed, and he certainly showed how good he can be in front of goal for the Championship outfit this season despite missing the majority of the campaign with an Achilles injury.

The 27-year-old scored eight goals in 10 league appearances – including six in eight outings on his return to action – to show that the injury hasn't affected him.

Meanwhile, Magpies manager Rafa Benitez will surely be looking for a new centre-forward option this summer with Joselu failing to shine and Aleksandar Mitrovic surely on his way out following a successful loan spell with Fulham.

We asked Newcastle fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would want to hijack Leeds' bid to sign Hernandez on a free, and a majority 67% of those said they wouldn't.

Those supporters may understandably feel that the Tyneside outfit need to be aiming higher if they want to secure another top-half Premier League finish next term, although if they were going to bring one marquee striker to St James' Park, they probably wouldn't turn their noses up at bringing the Uruguayan in for nothing, too.
